What is stick welding and when do you use it?

Stick welding, technically shielded metal arc welding, uses a coated electrode that produces its own shielding gas as it burns. It’s the most rugged of the common welding processes and works in conditions that would shut down MIG or TIG.

We use stick when the work is outdoors in wind or weather, the metal is rusty or painted, the access is tight, or the joint needs penetration that lighter processes can’t reach.
